Womens Shelter 1 1024

The Women’s Shelters project was developed following the 2013 Report on Conjugal Violence in Eeyou Istchee and has since been an important priority for the Cree Nation Government. There will be one coastal and one inland shelter with 18 beds each and hosting programs to best meet the needs of our Cree women and children experiencing conjugal and related violence. The Waswanipi building was erected in early 2017.

Construction of the Waskaganish shelter was delayed due to lot stability concerns and, as with all projects, the quality and safety of the building were paramount over timelines. The lot has since been stabilized and the construction should be completed in early winter of 2018.

A modern logo was chosen for the facilities, representing a traditional story of care and respect that will hallmark the services offered.
